Defending Rights & Dissent

In our recent political climate, there’s been countless suppression of protests and speech. With increasing pressure and assaults on our right to free speech, nonprofits Greenpeace and Defending Rights & Dissent teamed up to build a “Free to Speak Bill of Rights” in order to reassert our essential freedoms granted by the first amendment. I designed a microsite and accompanying PDF that could be shared easily and communicated the peoples’ dedication to this freedom. We later expanded on the microsite and built an extensive resource hub with dozens of resources organized within the site. These resources further helped defenders of free speech.

Process - Vision Board

First we established the style and direction of the design. This vision board determined the intended feel of the project. We decided on bold, collage images to portray the power of free speech. The colors resembled that of the United States to link this struggle to the core values of Americans. And the font was inspired on these same bold visions. While the imagery and font changed as the design developed, this preliminary phase was meant to find a direction we could look back to when next steps weren’t clear.

Process - Imagery

I then used the established design direction to begin developing real design elements to be used in the site. After plenty of sketching and experimentation, I created this collage that would become the cornerstone of the project’s design. I utilized the two images shown below plus the core red color and the texture shown below to create this visual. This image was utilized in the site as well as the PDF.

Free to Speak Bill of Rights - PDF

This three-page PDF document was developed as a downloadable and printable version of the Free to Speak Bill of Rights. Editable versions of this were also available for activists wanting to create a similar document, using this as the structure.

Website Homepage

Homepage of the Free to Speak Bill of Rights microsite including sections for intro, purpose, feedback, and endorsements.

Resource Hub

We then began expanding on the site and implementing the design system into the Resource Hub. This required some new variations in visuals as well as a Resource Hub landing page and seven individual syllabus pages. Shown below is the Resource Hub homepage with each syllabus organized into an accordion menu. There was an extensive list of resources so this was the most efficient way to organize the information. The main page and each syllabus page are also equipped with a search bar. For website viewers needing emergency information on immigration-related topics, Syllabus 3 is emphasized with a brighter color and surrounding stroke.

As each syllabus page varied in amount of sections and length of information presented, the page design style was made to be easily adjustable in length. The background image was pulled from the homepage and was adjusted so that the design would be just as effective no matter the page length.
